Do you remember that old joke about how a cold gets better by itself in a week but if you take medicine for it you can shorten the time to about seven days? Here is a quote from a site offering a "Total Treatment Plan for Colds & Flu":
Consult a licensed health care professional if: symptoms persist for more that 10 days (for adults) or 5 days (for children) or worsen; cough persists for more than 7 days, tends to recur, or is accompanied by rash, persistent headache, fever that lasts more than 3 day; if new symptoms occur.
The product that offers this marvellous "treatment" is water, and this fact is freely admitted on the web site of the company selling it. That company, King Bio Pharmaceuticals, was taken to court by the National Council Against Health Fraud in an attempt to get the court to rule that lying in advertising is lying in advertising. Unfortunately, the NCAHF came up against a judge who was incapable of distinguishing truth from fiction. I made the following comment at the time:
It's official – Homeopaths can tell lies (26/4/2003)
Imagine that someone wanted to sell you water for several hundred dollars per litre, that they publicly admitted that it was nothing but water, that they sold several such waters for different purposes and admitted that there was no difference between the different products other than in the labelling and intended purpose. Imagine also that this someone claimed that these magic waters with nothing in them cured, sorry "relieved", various illnesses including colds, asthma, arthritis, osteoporosis, jet lag, PTSD following the World Trade Center destruction, and even the ill effects of vaccination. Imagine then that you were a concerned citizen who objected to the fraud and lies and wanted to do something about it. If you live in California, it looks like you would be out of luck because an appeals court has just established a precedent by ruling that some liars called King Bio Pharmaceuticals can say and do whatever they like.
Supporters of and believers in quackery have been overjoyed at this ruling. What made it especially good for some of them is that the court rejected the expert evidence of Dr Stephen Barrett of Quackwatch, apparently because he was biased against the idiocy of homeopathy. Apparently it is not legitimate to object to a fraud or express an opinion about it unless you have no opinion about the fraudulent practice! Only a judge or a believer in magic could cope with the dissonance of this doublespeak. I was once accused of being biased against quackery, and my response was "If you have to ask, I am not communicating well enough".
The boss water-bottler at King Bio took exception to this. For some reason he was unable to identify who I am, so rather than responding to me directly he sent his response to the Usenet newsgroup misc.health.alternative. I once wrote a piece titled "Homeopathy – how could any honest person sell this rubbish?", and Dr King's comments do nothing to change that question in my mind.

Brief rebuttal from King Bio Pharmaceuticals
This is obviously someone who is attempting to spin a solid and sound victory for King Bio Pharmaceuticals, homeopathy, and the people into a twisted political purpose. The so called National Council Against Health Fraud (NCAHF) have for over a decade tried to terrorize and debunk anything natural that could be considered competitive with conservative medical procedures. When you read their materials you will experience their obsessive-compulsive manic type behaviors.
The Court of Appeals found the NCAHF "presented no evidence that King Bio's products were not safe and effective, relying instead on a general attack on homeopathy, made by witnesses who had no knowledge of or experience with King Bio's products, and who were found to be biased and unworthy of credibility."

In more King Bio news, I see that there was a story in the Asheville Citizen-Times which said:
King Bio is researching once again and is coming up with 14 prescription-only products to treat cancer, King said. Doctors around the country are testing the formulas. The compounds are undergoing clinical trials by independent laboratories.
I expect to hear from Dr King as soon as he is ready to take the Cancer 100 Challenge.
