Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) – liars tell us it is harmless

• tissue under the skin covering the jaw and cheek is infected
• infection spreading into her face
• she is probably very sick

Hib
• very dangerous to children under 5 years old
• even more dangerous to infants

Hib germ
• spreads through contact with infected person
• germ enters body through the nose and throat

Once infected
• unknown how long it takes to get sick

Symptoms
• fever
• severe headache
• severe sore throat
• severe breathing problems

Complications
• brain damage
• seizures
• paralysis
• hearing loss
• death
