Mr O'Neill has subsequently claimed that he did not send this to me. The following message was sent to the Australian Computer Society

From: CCRG < william@ccrg.com
Date: Monday, March 06, 2000 2:03 PM
Subject: peter bowditch

To whom it may concern:

One of your members, Peter Bowditch, maintains a website https://ratbags.com, for what he terms "The Millennium Project".

Maintained on this website is libelous, fraudulent, and manufactured information and emails concerning myself, William P. O'Neill and my company, the Canadian Cancer Research Group.

Mr. Bowditch has been requested to remove this information, and any links to my site, for the above stated grounds. He has refused to do so and continues to agressively and maliciously defame.

I trust that as an interested party representing the interests of Australina computer users, you would not condone such behavior and as such would kindly intercede on our behalf.

I await your response.

William P. O'Neill
CEO-Founder
Canadian Cancer Research Group
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

To which he received the following reply from an office-bearer of the ACS:

Thank you for your email.

I have examined Mr Bowditch's site and found it to contain nothing which exceeds the bounds of robust opinion, which in this country is perfectly lawful.

Dear Mr. Bowditch:

You appear to be under the mistaken impression that we are not taking action concerning the comments you have published on your web site as it concerns the Canadian Cancer Research Group..

We have done the necessary preparation for our undertakings with you.

Today, I am providing you with the opportunity to withdraw and delete all information, links, meta tags and/or comments from your site, as it relates to the Canadian Cancer Research Group and William P, O'Neill.

We have officially communicated with all of the necessary Canadian and Australian authorities concerning this matter and we have agreed, that in goodwill, we will offer you final opportunity.

We will consider your non-response to this e-mail as your instruction to proceed with our action.

William P. O'Neill

209.195.93.155

Consider this page to be my response. In any case, this message comes from "wingate.ccrg (host155.ccrg.cust.cyberus.ca [209.195.93.155]" and Mr O'Neill has denied four times that a message coming from there was from him. This may well be a forgery too.

All materials concerning the Canadian Cancer Research and/or William P. O'Neill, including all data, links, meta tags, postings and html content have been downloaded from your site, in all forms, including their evolutionary content. Also, all information demonstrating access and extent and degree of circulation, particularly in Canada, of the foregoing materials, including elicited e-mails and usenet postings have been downloaded. The foregoing is evidence, upon which our statement of claim concerning libel and damages, is to be applied within Canadian jurisdiction, and shall be served upon you in Australia.

In the event you choose not attend your defense in Canada, the judgment will be served and enforced upon you in Australia.

You have willfully and malignantly published and manufactured, libelous and defaming information and it is my intention to ensure that the full force and effect of all civil and criminal law, as concerns this matter, is brought to bear upon you.

All future communications will be coming from our attorneys: Merovitz & Potechin.

I encourage you to continue your mindless libel and defamation. It simply serves to demonstrate my case.

William P. O'Neill

 209.195.93.155

As this threat came from "host155.ccrg.cust.cyberus.ca [209.195.93.155]" and Mr O'Neill has repeatedly denied that a communication from this address came from him, I must still consider the possibility that this is a hoax or forgery. Subject: Final Notice
Date sent: Wed, 22 Mar 2000 11:35:22 -0500

March 22, 2000.

Sir:

This is my last and final notice to you.

You continue to fraudulently and libelously represent myself and the Canadian Cancer Research Group on your web site https://ratbags.com/rsoles.

We have prepared all materials, concerning this matter, to proceed with civil and criminal actions. We have advised computer crime and fraud divisions of both the New South Wales, Police Department, in Australia, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, in Canada.

We demand that all materials referencing the Canadian Cancer Research Group and William P. O'Neill be removed from your web site immediately, and that all materials on other sites, that has been republished from the site in question, be removed.

We also demand that, in the event the web site in question remains operational, that you publish on the front page of that web site, for a period of no longer than six months, the following statement:

"I, Peter Bowditch, owner and operator of the website Millennium Project acknowledge that all statments or information contained on the web site Millennium Project, concerning the Canadian Cancer Research Group were false, untrue, and malicious.

I withdranw my comments and sincerely apologize to the patients of the Canadian Cancer Research Group, its' staff, and to William P. O'Neill."

Be, absolutely certain, that in the event our demands are not met by 12:00 noon EST, Canada, March 23, 2000, we will initiate both criminal and civil proceedings.

Govern yourself accordingly:

I'm getting sick of this. Sick of receiving illiterate messages full of mistakes in punctuation, spelling and grammar. Sick of being accused of libel by someone who feels entitled to call me a "righteous fucking psycho", a "fetid dung heap", "pond scum" and "an incredibly stupid fuck". Sick of being accused of fraud by someone who is not a doctor yet claims to have patients and a medical practice and who uses my name to open email accounts. Sick of receiving empty threats of litigation and criminal charges when real lawyers have said that I have done nothing to warrant these. Nearly as sick, in fact, as I get when I hear of people with no more medical qualifications than I have talking about their patients and their medical practice and their treatments for cancer.

So, here's my advice to Mr O'Neill. First, turn on the spell checker in Outlook Express. It won't help with the grammar and the punctuation but at least your messages will contain real words. Second, talk to a real lawyer, listen to the advice you get, and get them to do your threatening for you. Third, the next time you are talking to the RCMP, let them know you run a medical practice and don't forget to tell them you are not a doctor.

I might be sick of this, but apparently Mr O'Neill is not. As Mr O'Neill is writing the script, I am quite prepared to go along with his wishes and to continue to post his words here.

I sincerely apologize to any and all of those I libeled or misrepresented.

Peter Bowditch

Of course, I did not write this. I have no intention of apologising for anything or shutting this site down. And if I were planning to do those things, I would not use the spellings "apologize" or "libeled", and I would use capital letters for my name.

And one last thing … (4/5/2013)
I hoped it wasn't someone playing a cruel April Fool's joke when I saw this news in the Ottawa Citizen on April 1.

Yes, folks, the beloved William P O'Neill of the Canadian Cancer Research Group and its descendants has gone to the great cesspit in the sky, taking the Gutless Anonymous Liar with him. Sadly, he died quickly and not of cancer. I posted a message to his memorial guest book, but unfortunately some technical glitch prevented it from being published.

I will maintain my own memorial to him here by archiving his correspondence with me and also the wonderful messages he sent wearing his Gutless Anonymous Liar mask. It would be a tragedy for this valuable collection of literature to disappear.
